Drainage planning for retaining walls and sloped properties

Walls hold soil; water breaks walls

Walk the lake slopes around Pottsboro, Gordonville, or Kingston and you can read the history of retaining walls in this corridor: the plumb ones and the leaning ones, and behind nearly every leaning one, the same autopsy. Not crushed blocks. Not thin concrete. Water: backfill that held it, drains that never existed, and a hillside routed directly into the wall's lap.

The physics are simple and unforgiving. Soil pushes on a wall; saturated soil pushes far harder, both because it is heavier and because trapped water becomes hydrostatic pressure with nowhere to go but through the wall. On the Blackland side of the corridor the clay adds its own shove, swelling as it wets. A wall that will stand for decades is therefore a drainage system first and a wall second.

The system, layer by layer

Free-draining backfill. Directly behind the wall goes a column of clean gravel, not the clay that came out of the cut. Gravel gives water a fast vertical path to the drain instead of letting it stack up as pressure. Backfilling with native clay is the single most common wall-building mistake in this region, and it is fatal on a schedule of two to five wet seasons.

Filter fabric. A geotextile wraps the gravel, separating it from the retained soil so fines cannot migrate in and clog it. Without fabric, good drainage quietly becomes no drainage over a few years, and the wall starts moving long after everyone forgot who built it.

A drain that daylights. A perforated pipe at the base of the gravel collects the water, and, critically, carries it somewhere: daylighting downhill, to a swale, away. A buried pipe with no exit is decoration. Weep holes through the face add a visible backup and a diagnostic: weep holes that never weep during a storm mean the system behind them is clogged or absent.

Surface routing. The finished grade above the wall slopes away from the edge, and the slope's runoff gets intercepted (a swale, a bar ditch) and routed around the wall's ends. Roof water discharges nowhere near the backfill. The wall handles the soil; the grading handles the hill.

Height changes the paperwork, not the physics

Over 4 feet, or under any surcharge (a driveway, a slope, a structure above), the wall becomes an engineered structure: sized footing, reinforcement, often geogrid tying the wall into the retained mass, and in most corridor cities a permit that requires exactly that engineering. On unincorporated county land the permit disappears but the pressure does not, which is why the 4-foot engineering rule applies here regardless of jurisdiction. Lake communities add their own review layers, and Lake Kiowa's POA and Texoma shoreline oversight both have opinions worth learning before the first block sets.

Repair, rebuild, and the honest line

A wall standing plumb with a local problem (a shifted cap, a crushed section of drain) repairs honestly. A wall past plumb, cracked through its structure, or bulging is a rebuild, because the cause has to be fixed and the cause is behind the wall. The wall scope that follows itemizes the invisible system by name: backfill, fabric, drain, daylight, grading. On a slope, that list is the wall.
